Since August 2007 the area of the Nuovi scavi that includes the Villa of the Papyri has been closed for restoration work. This is includes conservation works on the wall paintings and mosaics, substitution of the protective roofing, small excavations to finish off incomplete works (where structures/decorative features are half in/half out of the ground), etc. in order to improve and protect the area. No date has been given for the completion of works and when the Villa will be open to the public again, but much work has been completed and it is hoped that the online booking facility will soon be available again. For safety reasons the underground theatre is closed to public access until further notice.
